About us

Our Story

Australia's first and only Sondheim repertory company, Watch This is an ambitious, grass-roots venture presenting bold and sophisticated music theatre to audiences in Melbourne and beyond. Our commitment to our craft attracts teams of wonderfully talented artists and creatives.

For over fourteen years, we've upheld an enviable reputation in a highly competitive field, boasting thirty-one Green Room Award nominations with seven wins, alongside multi-million dollar commercial and state sponsored productions. We have also broken ground by touring full-scale musicals to regional centres around Victoria.

We are passionate about creating exciting, immediate theatrical experiences for theatre-goers. We also seek to ensure these experiences are available to as many people as possible - a philosophy that informs the relatively simple matter of ticket pricing to more complex touring proposals.

Past productions include AssassinsPacific OverturesCompanyMerrily We Roll Along, A Little Night Music. Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and most recently Colour and Light. We also created a five part online docuseries The Art of Making Art, showcasing the work of our designers and an insight into producing independent music theatre.

All projects to date have been made possible by the generosity of visionary donors and philanthropic organisations, including the Robert Salzer Foundation, Lyngala Foundation and during our debut season, the Opera & Arts Support Group. Since 2016, Watch This has been included on the Register of Cultural Organisations - a significant endorsement of our contribution to the sector.
