Watch This is a bold, grass-roots organisation presenting outstanding, sophisticated musical theatre to audiences in Melbourne and regional Victoria. Our ambition and commitment to the highest production/ performance standards attract teams of wonderfully talented artists and creatives. To date we have garnered an impressive 12 Green Room Award nominations for our three Melbourne seasons: Assassins 2013, Pacific Overtures 2014 (winning Best Supporting Actor - Adrian Li Donni) and Company 2015. We've also collaborated on a model for touring our work to regional centres with Assassins in 2014 and again in 2016, with Company, in partnership with Regional Arts Victoria.
From the outset, our goal has been to launch a Sondheim repertory company - an Australian first - creating opportunities for artists and audiences to regularly explore an extraordinary, diverse and challenging body of work by one of the undisputed masters of contemporary music theatre. We are passionate about creating exciting, immediate theatrical experiences for theatre-goers. We are also committed to ensuring that these experiences are available to as many people as possible - a philosophy that informs the relatively simple matter of ticket pricing to more complex touring proposals!
All projects to date have been made possible by the generosity of the Lyngala Foundation and other visionary individuals/ organisations, including the Opera & Arts Support Group. Most recently, Watch This are grateful for critical support from the Robert Salzer Foundation.
Watch This has recently been included on the Register of Cultural Organisations - an incredible endorsement of our contribution to the sector. To Support our dynamic young organisation, why not make a tax deductible donation today?
We concluded our 2017 season of Merrily We Roll Along by Stephen Sondheim and George Furth at Southbank Theatre, The Lawler last month. We are delighted by the enthusiatic feedback by peers and patrons alike. If you missed it, here are a few excerpts from the critics:
"The ensemble are consistently wonderful and all support the possibly perfect casting of the trio of friends." ★★★★ - Anne-Marie Peard, The Music
"Brooks' brazen theatrics and Melloy's nuances of character really hit the mark ... The signature tune Merrily We Roll Along is a real crowd pleaser..." - Alex First, The Blurb
- Alex First, The Blurb
"Gardner as the thoroughly decent, quietly exasperated Charley [...] brings total authenticity and precision to the role, nailing the fiendish 'Franklin Shepard Inc.' and suggesting the declining years with subtly and nuance." - Tim Byrne, Australian Book Review
"[T]oo many standout moments to recount here [...] the collection of strong performances and Sondheim's magnificent score make this new production of Merrily a worthwhile visit." - Bradley Storer, Theatre Press
"Sung acoustically, this production is intimate and streamlined" - Cameron Woodhead, The Age
Stay tuned for news of our upcoming 2018 production.
